How to Apply

Call for applications for the master programs for 2024-2025 is open.

It will close on May 20, 2024, 23:59 AOE.

The call is joint with the master program in Scientific and Data-Intensive Computing.

Please follow the instructions for application below. You will need to apply via the online university system (a quick guide for applying online is available here) and fill an additional online form (attaching a receipt to the online application).

Available Positions

65 positions per each master program  are available according to the following table

EU citizens or equivalentNon-EU citizens living abroad

During the selection process, we consider equivalent to EU citizens:

  • Citizens of Norway, Iceland, Lichtenstein, Switzerland, Republic of San Marino, and Vatican City
  • Non-EU citizens already living in Italy

Admission requirements

  • you must hold an academic degree, or equivalent, with a graduation grade greater or equal to 80 over 110. In the absence of a Bachelor Degree, the weighted average of the exams will be considered instead.
  • You must have obtained at least 30 ECTS in total in the following topics:
    • mathematics (MAT/*)
    • computer science (INF/01)
    • information engineering (ING-INF/*)
    • physics (FIS/*)
    • statistics and mathematical methods for decisions (SECS-S/*)
    • quantitative economy and finance (SECS-P01, 05)
    • molecular biology and genetics (BIO/10, 11, 18)
  • Among the 30 ECTS above, at least 9 ECTS must be obtained in mathematics (MAT/*, SECS-S/06)
  • You must have an adequate knowledge of English, certified by internationally recognised certification of level B2 or higher, or by passing a test equivalent to level B2.

Available positions will be assigned in two distinct selection procedures; if some of the positions will still be unassigned after them, a supplementary selection may be held.

In order to apply, you need to register in the university system via this link (click register on the menu, and follow instructions), and then apply for the selection procedure in the chosen master program. In order to apply, you have to log in with the credentials at the same link and choose “Admission to Competitive Exams” from the menu. Then choose master programs and then Data Science and Artificial Intelligence / Scientific and Data Intensive Computing, and follow the instructions. At this stage, you will need to express a preference for one of the two master programs.

During the online application, you will be required to upload in pdf format the following documentation, for the evaluation procedure (points 1,2,3,6 are mandatory):  

  1. [for students/degree holders of Italian universities only] self-certification of the degree and passed exams, or, in the case of students who have not yet graduated, self-certification of enrolment and study plan, complete with exams taken and to be taken. Check the call for details.

  2. curriculum vitae;
  3. other qualifications deemed useful for purposes of the evaluation (taken courses, relevant professional experience, etc.), if available;
  4. English language certification (level B2 or equivalent), if available;
  5. copy of a valid identity document;
  6. the pdf copy of an online self-evaluation questionnaire, which can be filled at this link.
  7. pay the fee for being admitted to the selection procedure.

We suggest you first fill the questionnaire in point 6, print the pdf copy, and the proceed with the online application.

Attention: if you do not apply via the university system, we cannot accept your application. Filling the online form is a necessary, but not a sufficient condition.

Selection Procedure

The selection procedure consists of two steps: an evaluation of the curriculum and an individual interview. During the interview, the English skills of those candidates not having a B2 certification will be tested. The basic preparation of students on mathematics, statistics, and informatics will also be tested. Please consult the syllabus for an overview of the arguments of possible questions that will be asked [master specific syllabus will be released soon].   

All the selection criteria will be detailed in the official call for admission.

Admitted students will have to enrol in the following periods.  Admitted international students should immediately contact the international student office for further details on the procedure. 

Enrollment

Admitted candidates must submit their enrollment application exclusively online and finalize it by paying the first installment of fees and contributions within the deadlines indicated in the calendar below. Failure to do so will result in the loss of the right to enroll.

Eligible candidates who were not admitted can compete for any vacant spots by submitting their online application for a second chance within the deadlines specified in the calendar. Failure to do so will result in the loss of the right to participate in all subsequent selection processes.

Regarding the two selections:

  • The candidate who wins on their 1st preference course must enroll in such course. The 2nd preference choice will automatically be cancelled.
  • The candidate who wins on their 2nd preference course and is eligible but not admitted to the 1st preference course:
    • Can enroll in the 2nd preference course.
    • Can submit a second chance application for the 1st preference course.
    • Can enroll in the 2nd preference course and at the same time submit a second chance application for the 1st preference course. If later admitted to the 1st preference course, the candidate will have to request a transfer.
  • The candidate who is eligible but not admitted to both the 1st and 2nd preferences can submit a second chance application for one or both courses.

Enrollment and second chance applications must be submitted online, even by those who have not yet graduated, from the day the rankings are published and within the deadlines listed in the following calendar:

International students

IMPORTANT: application of international students is restricted to the 1st selection phase, due to VISA restrictions. 

International non-EU students need a VISA to study in Italy. The full procedure is explained in detail on this page of the university website. The fundamental step to get a VISA is to apply for pre-enrollment to the Italian Embassy/Consulate in your country, by mid-July, 2022. You are encouraged to apply as soon as possible (preparing all docs and get an appointment takes time): it is sufficient to have applied for the selection procedure. In any case, it is mandatory to apply for pre-enrollment: we cannot accept you as a student if the pre-enrollment deadline expired and you have not applied to the embassy! 
Please refer to the Italian embassy of your country for the pre-enrollment procedures. Please book an appointment with the embassy in due advance, you may fail to pre-enrol for lack of free appointments. If you need help in this respect, please contact via email the international student office, writing to international.students@amm.units.it. Please specify that you ask for help for the master program in Data Science and Scientific Computing in the subject of the email.

Syllabus

This is the list of topics that may be asked during the interview to check the basic preparation of students.

  • Computer science: knowledge of basic programming, knowledge and minimal experience with a programming language, knowledge of basic notions of algorithms and data structures.
  • Mathematics: fundamentals of differential and integral calculus of one and more variables. Fundamentals of differential equations. Fundamentals of linear algebra (matrices, determinants, systems of linear equations, eigenvalues and eigenvectors).
  • Probability: basics of probabilities and elements of statistics (descriptive statistics and basic of inferential methods).
